A Norfolk Weekend in the Pacific Northwest!

We have just returned from the BEST weekend in quite some time - first of all, we were with great friends, sharing our love of needlework!  Secondly, we immersed ourselves in the Norfolk sampler tradition!  And third, we went off our beaten path to find new adventures!  What could be better?

Friday morning found us battling a snow-storm as we headed our car south to Portland!  Our stitching and traveling friends, Barbara and Beth were with us - and we knew this was going to be FUN!  As soon as we got out of the snow - which we did pretty quickly.  As we whizzed along the highway, we talked of all the things we were soon to enjoy, and reminisced on how we'd met some of the people we were going to see again this weekend.

First of course, we needed some serious retail therapy!  The Button Emporium and Ribbonry was our first stop.  As we'd recently taken the Button Lover's Brag Book class from Sherri Jones of Patrick's Woods, we knew we needed some nice new buttons!  

And we certainly found some beauties!  This faux scrimshaw of Mozart is my favorite!

The rest of the afternoon was whiled away with fabric stores, home goods shops and a wonderful paper goods shop, called Oblation featuring letterpressed stationery made on the premises.  Last time we were there, I thought I saw one old letterpress being used to make gorgeous vintage-look stationery and invitations.  Now there are at least five! All looking like antiques - all in working order and being "pressed" into service!  

Next, we met up with Amy and Sandy and headed off to Ken's Artisan Pizza for a wonderful dinner!  Then off to check into our hotels and rest up for the next big day!

The morning found us joining in on a meeting of the Northwest Sampler Guild, at the home of a member.  She is the owner of some lovely Norfolk samplers.  There we met with Joanne Martin Lukacher, our author, who was speaking the following day at a small exhibit being organized by the folks in Vancouver, WA.  It was a lovely day, as Leslie has not only Norfolk samplers, but many lovely pieces all over her beautiful home.  She made us feel so welcome as we oohed and ahhed over her treasures!  A wonderful lunch was prepared by the NSG members who live in the area, and we enjoyed our time visiting with everyone.

In the afternoon, we had to stop by just a few more shops of course - quilt shops and antique stores abound in the area, and we were not disappointed!  

That night, we again met up with friends old and new for dinner.  Such a lovely time talking with everyone, and the Hilton's Gray's at the Park dining room was wonderful!

The next day was the exhibit and talk and we were so excited to see even more samplers and visit with Joanne.  The Marshall House in the old Fort Vancouver was the venue and as soon as we stepped inside, we knew we wanted to come back for a tea party some day.  What a beautiful old house - the perfect setting for the event!

One of our greatest joys during the two days of samplers, was seeing Amy Mitten's new design - this gorgeous pocket, based on the sampler she has in the book - Ann Wade.  It seems like such a short time ago that we were sending out a "Little Girls Lost" notice, hoping to find out where several Norfolk samplers had landed.  We got a very quick reply from Amy Mitten that we could stop looking for Ann Wade - she was hanging on Amy's wall.  Very generously, Amy offered to send a photograph for the book, and we are so grateful.  But beyond that, Amy took the sampler and charted an adaptation of it, 

and then she continued to design a stunning needleworker's pocketbook.  These projects can be done in online tutorials - Amy gives you everything you need to finish them up - and oh, my, her kits are wonderful!  Now just LOOK at this pocket book - isn't it amazing?

It was truly a magnificent weekend!

St. Patricks Day and the Luck of the Irish

Sit down with a green beer or maybe a cup of green tea and enjoy a bit of the traditions of Ireland.

The shamrock refers to the young sprigs of clover or trefoil. It is known as a symbol of Ireland, with St. Patrick having used it as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity, according to legend.

Luck of the Irish:
This is an ironic phrase. The Irish have been, and are a spectacularly unlucky race. The "luck of the Irish" is BAD luck, as any reading of Irish history will document. Apparently, the original and proper use of this irony goes clear back to the Old Country and migrated to America early on. 

Corned Beef and Cabbage:
So what do you think? Is Corned Beef and Cabbage a traditional Irish meal? The article below says no.  Are you Irish, do you think it’s us crazy Americans who developed this tradition?  I do like corned beef and cabbage with potatoes, but the rest of the family isn’t in agreement. So I too usually only get it when I visit a New York deli. And boy do they pile it on! There is one deli in the theater district that is truly known for their corned beef sandwiches, and I’m sorry that the name escapes me. But oh yummy and that big pickle to boot! With lots of mustard and I have a real treat.

Although most often associated with fine white embroidery on linen, the North of Ireland has a long tradition of stitching on fine cotton, dating from the eighteenth century.

The collections and archives at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum contain many examples of finished work in addition to outworkers sample pieces and original designs on paper. The most significant collection is a group of over 600 embroidered, lace trimmed, and printed handkerchiefs from the early twentieth century, featuring the designs of the Belfast artist Herbert R. Lilley.
A collection of 80 embroidered samplers, dating from 1760 to 1953, school needlework sample books, and a range of needlework tools provide an insight into embroidery as worked for hobby or pleasure, rather than for profit.

Celtic Cross:
Celtic cross stitch sample patterns are a style of cross stitch embroidery and a true embodiment of Celtic art patterns seen in early medieval art using contemporary cross stitch techniques. Celtic cross stitch is a simple and elegant way of doing embroidery. By tradition deep, rich colors are used to make intricate geometrical patterns, spirals, interlacing themes, knotwork, alphabets, animal forms and zoomorphic patterns.

Celtic cross stitch patterns can be simple; however, the more intricate the pattern, the more expertise is required. This method of embroidery is very old, but still as popular as it was long ago.

Book on Northern Ireland Samplers: Well I thought I owned this book and was going to add a bit of an overview of it for you here, but I cannot find it! So it must not have made it to a cash register with me yet! I only find this one book on Irish sampler making.   There is very little additional information in any of the books in my library and as Julie will tell you, our libraries are pretty full! 

Lace Making:
Ireland is known more for lace making then sampler making from the information I have found.  In The Complete International Book of Embroidery by Mary Gostelow, it talks about the different types of lace making that was significant to Ireland.  Mountmellick and Carrickmacross work are the two most popular.  Mountmellick is characterized by designs worked in soft un-mercerized cotton sometimes known as “knitting Cotton”. Satin Stitch, sometimes padded, bullion knots, French knots, cable, chain, coral and herringbone stitches are mostly used with a buttonhole fringe edge. This style of lace started about 1825. 
Another form of Irish-flowering embroidery is Carrickmacros. This consists of layering cambric on top of a ground of hexagonal net. The outline design is stitched through the two fabrics with a running stitch.  By cutting only through the cambric, it is carefully removed to reveal the net below.  The running stitch is then bound with over-stitching to prevent the edges of the cambric from fraying. Sometimes tamboured chain stitch is also added.  Some pieces are so intricate that they look like needle-made lace. Much of this work was done in the convent by the Sisters.

Irish Marriage Traditions:
Taking the last stitch in the dress on the wedding day will bring good luck.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe.
Blue is considered a lucky color in Ireland, something borrowed is a symbol of friendship and the brides handkerchief is usually something new for good luck.  Something old is the connection to family and the sixpence is so you will always be financially well off in your marriage.

Rosa Mundi

Rosa Mundi is a beautiful rose that appears on many of the Norfolk samplers featured in the book Imitation and Improvement: The Norfolk Sampler Tradition by Joanne Martin Lukacher.

Joanne has this to say about the rosa mundi:  

Within the typical floral border of Norfolk samplers can be seen the ancient rosa mundi, red edged and striped white roses (reputed to have originated in Norfolk), prominent and distinctive rose buds, violas, honeysuckle, columbine, forget-me-nots, carnations and morning glories.  A 17th-century needlework depiction of the rosa mundi in conjunction with the arms of the City of Norwich can be seen on a turkeywork pillow in the collection of Carrow House in Norwich.  

In his The History of the Worthies of England, Thomas Fuller says “…and the rose of roses (rosa mundi) had its first being in this city.” (Norwich)

Rosa Mundi was first described in 1583, and according to 'The Garden Book' of Sir Thomas Hanmer (published in England in 1659) it was originally found in Norfolk '..upon a branch of the common red rose...' . However there is an earlier legend which states that the ‘Rosa Mundi’ was named after Rosa­mund Clifford, the mistress of King Henry II who reigned as England’s monarch from 1154 to 1189. Rosamund Clifford (1150-1176), also known as the "The Fair Rosamund" or "Rose of the World", was the long-time mistress of King Henry II. Henry was forced to marry Princess Eleanor who, jealous of her husbands relationship with the fair Rosamund, is said to have had her murdered by poison.

After her death, Henry and Rosamund's family paid for a tomb at Godstow Nunnery near Oxford 

and put an endowment in place for it to be attended by nuns who were instructed to place Rosa Mundi flowers upon it on the anniversary of her death. This became a popular local shrine until 1191 (two years after Henry died) until St. Hugh of Avalon - Bishop of Lincoln happened to visit Godstow Nunnery and saw Rosumund's tomb right in front of the high altar. It was covered with rose flowers and lit candles, and upon calling Rosamund a harlot, ordered her remains to be removed from the church. Her tomb was taken to the cemetery at the nuns' chapter house close by but it eventually became destroyed during the 'Dissolution of the Monasteries' between 1536 and 1540.

The rosa mundi was one of the prominent flowers found on the Norfolk Samplers. Their beautiful strong contrasting colors of red, pink and white that giving a striped affect.  

You see this flower in the artwork of the day as well.  Botany was a popular hobby of the wealthy, developing new graphs from the plants in their greenhouses and through trade bringing in new species from lands afar.

The rosa mundi is not only found on the samplers from Norfolk, but on the shawls that developed in the area as well that they made to emulate those shawls form the East.

Below are some of the interesting stories  and information I have found regarding the rosa mundi.

Rosa Mundi is the Summer Solstice Festival of Our Mother God. It is the first High Feast of the Mother Half of the year. It represents the southern pole of the World Axis and the Southern Gate of Heaven.

The whole season of Rosa Mundi (which can vary in length according to local custom but always covers at least several days following the festival and some hold it to last until the Golden Festival of Hiranya) is known as the Fire and Rose season. The two themes, obviously, are fire and roses, and it is not coincidental that in various forms of the Sleeping Beauty story the sleeping Princess may be guarded by thorny briar roses (the Sleeping Beauty's name is Briar Rose) or by fire (cf, Brünnhilde sleeping on the fire-girt rock).

The secret behind all this is that the Sleeping Beauty is the Spirit herself, the Guarded treasure. Fire and the Rose are ambiguous in this context, in that both are Treasures ("fire-worship" is very important in Aristasia, note for example the great Fire Temples, like that at Rayapurh) and both are Guardians - even the lovely Rose with her thorns.

So, ultimately the joyous Fire and Rose season, with its flowers and its fireworks - like the beautiful fairy tale - is about the soul's quest for the Spirit, for the Temple of the Heart whose form is the form of a Rose. For the sacred Rose whose petals are pure fire.

Miss Darcy's Library has a fresh perspective:
The rosa mundi, a fresh pink and white candy-striped rose that has apparently been around since the twelfth century, featured prominently. And this is where the real search began – for the phrase rosa mundi teased and tugged at my memory. Though I was never a proficient Latin scholar (and isn’t that an understatement!), it was nevertheless easily translated as “rose of the world”. I seemed to recall it being connected with several poems by Yeats, and possibly also to religion, but more than that I could not remember.

It seems that long before the rose became associated with Venus/Aphrodite, it was the emblem of the goddess Isis. The priestesses of the Isian cult used roses extensively in their rites and statues of the goddess often depicted her holding a rose in one hand, while garlands and bouquets of flowers, including roses, were scattered by participants in Isian festivals.

One of the most important of these festivals was the Isidis Navigatum, or blessing of the fleets. During the Greco-Roman period, Isis became the patroness of sailors and ships. It is thought that the tradition of adding carved female figureheads to the prows of ships dates back to this period and to the wish to invoke the goddess’s protection before setting out to sea. The Isidis Navigatum was celebrated in all the ports of Ancient Greece, in the harbours of Rome, on the shores of Greco-Roman Egypt, and throughout the Roman Empire, all the way up to the Seine (the Parisii, the tribe of Gauls living in the actual region of Paris, were wealthy and powerful merchants and ship-owners devoted to the cult of Isis, as attested by the discovery in the eighteenth century of a statue of the goddess in the church of St Germain-des-Prés; the ship which still appears at the centre of the city’s coat of arms is also a direct reference to these ancient navigators). Thus the phrase rosa mundi could stem from the wide-spread cult of Isis and all its attendant associations with navigation and journeys.

And Universal Quest has another view to teach us:
July 3rd is Rosa Mundi - Rose of the World - day in the Palestinian Christian Calendar. This day has its roots in Rosicrucian - - mythology (a 17th century secret society rooted in Christian mysticism that has influenced many aspects of modern life including Freemasonry. See the definition of Rosicrucianism at the Wikipedia site - Esoterically, the Rose is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge with the Rose of the World as a synonym for Pax Cultura, peace through culture. Daniil Andreev, the Russian mystic and poet, saw Rose of the World as a sign of  the future age of Mother of the World, a New spiritual and idealized Age of Aquarius. So now, when you look at a red rose you can see it as a meditation on an ideal new age to come and the dream of world peace and a new awakening.
Of all the flowers, the rose is a singular example of a natural form that has been included in the symbolism of many cultures, spiritual traditions and folklore throughout the centuries. This flower has been intricately connected to our ideas of love and beauty and as such has enjoyed an association with several Goddesses, among them are Inanna, Ishtar, Aphrodite, Venus, Lakshmi, Chloris, Cybele, Flora, Demeter, Astarte, Aurora, and Hecate. The rose also has associations with a few Gods, Cupid, Dionysius, Eros, Mars and Bacchus.

Rosa Mundi (recorded as far back as the fifteenth century) Type: Gallica. The color is pale pink to white with deep Rose-pink stripes overlaid. Its fragrance has been described as quite intense to moderately strong.

No matter what, the rosa mundi is a beautiful, unusual rose which is made all the more endearing because it has become associated with the Norfolk Sampler Tradition!
